+A good way to check if it is part of another word or not, is to use a decent Japanese-English translator such as [http://babelfish.altavista.com/ Babel Fish] to do a translation to English. Japanese words meant to be together will often produce a single English word while the Japanese words meant to be separate will often produce separate English words.
+Using the above as an example, the translation of 隊 gives Party/Team and 軍隊 gives Troop.
