Content Indicators

Category Weight + to ***
For all the categories in this section choose (if applicable) a weight between + (slight) to *** (excessive) describing the worst case of specific category occurrence in the anime.

The content indicators branch is intended to be a less geographically specific tool than the 'age rating' used by convention, for warning about things that might cause offence. Obviously there is still a degree of subjectivity involved, but hopefully it will prove useful for parents with delicate children, or children with delicate parents.

Nudity

Link to tag: here Are naked humans shown?

Nudity is the state of wearing no clothing. Based on scientific research it is estimated that humans have been wearing clothing for 650,000 years. It is related to the concept of modesty and is sometimes used to refer to wearing significantly less clothing than expected by the conventions of a particular culture and situation, and in particular exposing the bare skin or intimate parts.

Especially gracious fanservice shows tend to show their, mostly female, characters, most often without any clothes, only hiding genitals through the means of additions like steam.

Category Weight +   Naked skin is shown, e.g. naked buttocks. E.g. sitting around naked only barely covered by a towel at a hot springs. Wearing skimpy swimsuits usually would not count.
  *   Breasts (without nipples) are shown. Transformation nudity may fall into this case.
*+  Fully exposed breasts with nipples are shown, e.g. during a shower scene, at the hot springs or bath house. Usually the maximum rating used in ecchi anime.
**  Full frontal nudity with nipples and/or visible genitals.
Note: Rarely used in ecchi anime. An example of a non-porn 400 weight anime is Elfen Lied
Example, non-sexual: Full frontal nudity can occur in something like a scene where someone walks into a change room. There's essentially no sexual angle to it, but you get full frontal nudity, and for whatever reason, they decided to animate the genitals. This is not borderline porn.
**+ Most borderline porn / hentai.
Example: Kaifuku Jutsushi no Yarinaoshi / Redo of Healer
*** Go all the way to *** for close up genitals of either gender (more or less anatomically correct), even if pixeled out in a particular release.

Almost all porn/hentai also goes here.

Bit of sarcasm: + for an ankle, *** if you glimpse a garter... er... I guess stuff changes with times. Nipples seem to be a particular issue at the moment in certain parts.

Note A discussion on updating this content indicator was held in this CREQ (18.09.2015).

Sex

Link to tag: here Is there sex? Known as intercourse, the ultimate bond of love.

Category Weight +   Sex is 'implied', in that the sexual activities are not portrayed on camera and happen outside of what the viewer sees.
Example: A couple walks into a love hotel. Flash forward, and they are getting dressed in the morning while in the love hotel room.
  *   Sex is 'implied', and the sexual activity is also clearly referenced and/or talked about rather than implied through actions alone. The fact that sex happened is clearly spelled out.
Example: Using the same example as above, the couple makes direct references to sex; they say things such as: "I want you to make love to me tonight", "you were so good in bed last night".
*+  Sexual activity that is "on camera", but most of the action is not even indirectly visible.
Example: the action is on the bed under blankets/futons, sounds can be heard from the room next door, etc.
**  Sexual activity that is "on camera", but most of the action is indirectly visible.
Example: the male's backside is visible, penetrating a female that is crouched down behind a sofa, and therefore out of view.
**+ Most borderline porn / hentai.
*** Outright, obvious, sexual activities involving contact between the partners' genitals (vaginal intercourse, anal intercourse, scissoring/tribadism etc).
In the case of non-porn, it is "on camera" and "directly" visible, but notionally kept "obscured" through the use of camera angles and/or creative censorship.
Example: vaginal intercourse with the camera coming from behind the penetrating male partner, such that the male's body obscures all view of both partners' genitals, while both partners are obviously naked, and making a lot of obvious sexual hints such as moaning, flailing, etc.

Almost all porn/hentai also goes here.

Violence

Link to tag: here Is violence prevalent? Physical force against self or other, compelling action against one's will on pain of being hurt.

Category Weight +   If slapstick violence is prominent add a +.
*** For popping eyeballs and close up disembowelment bestow ***.

PROPOSED UPDATE

Category Weight +   Prominent slapstick violence and/or mild non-slapstick violence.
  *   Phsyical brawling (e.g. punching and kicking) until someone has light bruises and/or the loss of 1 tooth.
*+  Phsyical brawling that leads to extreme facial swelling (e.g. "to the size of a watermelon") and/or the loss of multiple teeth.
**  Any violence causing death and/or serious physical dismemberment (e.g. a limb is cut off).
**+ Added gore, repetitive killing/mutilation of more than 1 individual.
Example: ripped flesh, visible bones, excessive bleeding (e.g. pools of blood, blood fountains, vomiting blood)
  *** Excessive gore.
Example: exploding heads, popping eyeballs, close up disembowelment, vomiting intestines, mutilation of persons with dismembered limbs, torture.
