===Anime songs===
The following are acceptable sources for information on anime songs:
* '''VIDEO -''' OPs, EDs and insert songs are generally all given in the video.
* '''http://anison.info/data/about.html -''' it's better to use this URL. "Search by" terms explained: 作品 = basically the anime title; 曲 = song name; 人物 = person as in singer, arranger etc.; 音源 = catalog number.
* '''[http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/メインページ Japanese wiki] -''' you'd obviously need to search for the anime title, then look for 主題歌 (the most common title to put songs under), there should generally be all OP, ED and insert songs given and in which eps they're played (if more than 1 OP or ED).
===Creators===
The following are acceptable sources for information on creators:
* '''[http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/メインページ Japanese wiki] -''' if there's an entry for the person, it's generally correct.
* '''VIDEO''' - there are occasions where the creator name is actually given wrong in the video, but fortunately it happens seldom.
* '''http://www.allcinema.net/ -''' although, other than the name and list of credits for given person, there's no other info, sometimes there's the hiragana reading given, which is nice.
Creator sources really depend on what kind of a creator are we talking about, musician, seiyuu, producer or mangaka. The general source would be Japanese wiki, yes. People should also take note that the actual written name of a creator is the one given officially by Japanese source and therefore it's in most cases the kanji name. 谷口悟朗 is a proper Japanese name, Taniguchi Gorou is just the transcription of it. So when you request the addition of a new creator without providing the Official Japanese name, then you're trying to add a non-existent creator entry. Of course there are exceptions, like company names and especially musicians that officially give their names in roman letters. This does mean that if you want to add a creator without a Japanese wiki entry and who also doesn't appear on allcinema or there's no reading given for that person, then figuring out the transcription name is guesswork at best unless you can find some solid source for the reading on google, if not, then you can use for example http://tools.anidb.net/namer/ , enter the sure name and then given name (they must be added separately, can't add 谷口悟朗 at once, 谷口 first to get the surename marked as "s", then 悟朗 to get the male given name marked as "m". "f" means female given name) and just see which is the most common name by looking at the numbers, the higher the number, the more common the name, and romanise it (either with [http://www.animelab.com/anime.manga/translate animelab] or [http://romaji.org/ romaji.org]) to get the Main Title. The namer tool, which is written by rar, doesn't feature every Japanese name given, so there can be no matches, but generally, if google doesn't return any info and the namer tool gives no matches to 1 or both parts of the name, the creator probably doesn't exist with that name.
===Staff===
The following are acceptable sources for information on staff:
* '''VIDEO, VIDEO, VIDEO -''' this is THE definitive source for staff credits, and by video I do mean the one with original Japanese credits and NOT R1 credits. It's not to say that studio's haven't used some obscure credit type or mixing up 1 kanji in someone's name, that's where personal judgment comes in, but we'd still like to see what was originally give in the comment.
* '''The official page for the anime -''' duh... This is a no-brainer, but there's this thing that one needs to consider. Staff credits are added to the official page before the product itself is finalised for TV airing or video release, things might and often change on the final product and these changes are sadly not fixed on the official pages for the given anime. So official pages for anime are not definitive sources for staff credits like the video is. Hentai animation pages are particularly bad at giving matching staff credits with the video if they give them at all.
* '''[http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/メインページ Japanese wiki] -''' yes, Japanese wiki is actually a good source for the main credits, not to say that they don't make mistakes, but it's definitely better than allcinema most of the time.
* '''[http://cal.syoboi.jp/ cal.syoboi.jp] -''' this is the source we prefer for airing times of currently airing anime (remember, Japanese got like.. 28 hours in 1 day or something, anime airing after midnight still have the date of what for us is already yesterday, so those should be changed to reflect sane day count) and they also give the main staff credits, those are generally copied from the official page of the anime.
* '''[http://www1.vecceed.ne.jp/~m-satomi/ D2 Station] -''' or a more precise link - http://www1.vecceed.ne.jp/~m-satomi/data.animation.html . Imitates the exact credits given in the video and also adds episode specific credits (you need to click on the sub section usually as a link named by the episode range covered on that page). The only search you can do there is the browser search and there are a number of anime missing of course, but it's still a long list. Are there mistakes on that page? Yes there are.
* '''[http://wiki.livedoor.jp/radioi_34/d/ Anistaff] -''' similar to D2_station but has a search similar to wiki and it doesn't really give full episode specific credits, just the more important ones like key animation and in-betweeners, if any episode specific credits are given at all. Yes, mistakes have been noted on that page as well.
* '''[http://www.generalworks.com/databank/movie/anime.html SF Movie databank] -''' the link leads to their anime section. Only lists movies and OVAs, but they go back a long way to the past, there are cases where full credits are given, but often it's limited to the main staff. Mistakes noted on that page? Quite a lot, although the right to wrong ratio is in favour of right. They also peculiarly list R1 credits aka English credits if applicable for the anime, not all the time, though.
* '''[http://www.jmdb.ne.jp/ JMDB]''' - this is a page I haven't quite figured out yet. There seem to be credits given for movies, OVAs and TV anime alike, but they don't have anime that broadly covered. Also there seem to be 2 different interfaces for the entry pages that list staff credits - one has links for creators, the other doesn't, and they seem to contain different data and different ordering for example - Metropolis with creator links and Metropolis without creator links When doing a search on that page, you'll always seem to get the version with dots and links, when I search in google "jmdb メトロポリス", I'll get the other version. Mistakes? I haven't actually used it that much, but I can assume there are a few on entries with a lot of credits.
* There's this "shirayuki" something page which's URL I don't have here, but I haven't really used it much either. Will provide a link once at home.
* '''[http://www.allcinema.net/ AllCinema] -''' definitely more accurate than ANN, but the error ratio is a bit too high considering they only give the main credits, often the credits don't match the ones in video (that's not to say that they don't mean the same thing, but even that has happened), mistakes with kanji in creator names and sometimes even a completely different name. Yeah, we got someone here who has copied a whole lot from allcinema without checking the video, I'm not personally too happy about it, but the percentage of correct data gotten from allcinema still is much higher than wrong data.
Also use MASSADD for adding staff, unless you just want to add the most common and important credit(s) like direction (監督) or animation work (アニメーション制作), then using the dropdown menu is probably easier. To add a direction credit for Taniguchi Gorou for example, you enter 監督:谷口悟朗. Trying to add Direction:谷口悟朗, because the English part of the credit is just the translation, not an actual credit. 監督:Taniguchi Gorou does work, however.<br>
"But I can't type Japanese..." - hey, neither can I, I don't know much Japanese at all and we're not expecting users to be able to do that either. Massadding credits it pretty much only COPY/PASTE from some Japanese source (I'll list the common sources below) and editing it to the wanted format of "credit1:creator1;creator2;", the VIDEO part of it comes from COMPARING and thus verifying the correctness of the source you copied it from, after all, we all can see and unless the video source is really horrible, can make out differences in kanji (probably comparing the kanji pasted to the massadd box is a bad idea since the symbols are really small there, so comparing with the page you copied it from and perhaps increasing the font size is the better solution). So copying credits from a Japanese source and then verifying them with the video is the PROPER way of doing it, of course, we can't force you to do that, that's where the source field comes in, if all you did was copy/paste the credits without verifying anything, just give the url you copied from as the source, if you DID verify, then you can add the source you copied it from plus something like "verified with the intro/outro video" should be noted, but leaving out the copy source and just writing "intro/outro video" is enough, same thing, really. So what happens if you'll notice a mistake with the credit type? If the video says キャラクター設定 but the page gives キャラクターデザイン, then simply change it to what the video gives. It's simple if it's just a different variation of what is eventually the same credit, but it might take time if it's a case of アニメーション制作 vs 制作 for example, as people who don't know the meaning behind this credit may not easily find that 制作 is Work and アニメーション制作 is Animation Work, another common mix-up is 制作 vs 製作 (Production). If you notice a mistake in the creator's name, then you'll probably have a problem, since you'd need to get the correct kanji(s) from somewhere, the method I use is once again a tool made by rar - http://tools.anidb.net/krad.xml.gz (if it tries to save a file, try this link). It's a kanji builder, you build kanji by combining radicals, is it easy to use? No. Will it eventually become easy to use if I've used it enough? It did for me. But yeah, it requires patience... Basically kanji are often a combination of other kanji. For example if you look at a kanji, notice it having a symbol like 广, then you click on it on the table, then you notice the symbol 耳, you click on it on the table, this narrows the selection down to only 2 kanji - 廰 and 廳 from where you should be able to make out the one in the video. But yeah... generally, if the name in the video is different from the name given on the Japanese page you used to copy, then just don't add that credit, no data is better than wrong data.
===Cast===
The following are acceptable sources for information on the cast (as in characters and seiyuu):
* '''VIDEO -''' yeah... well... as always.
* '''The official page for the anime -''' Lists the main and secondary cast generally. Sometimes gives the hiragana readings as well (from which you can get the main name).
* '''[http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/メインページ Japanese wiki] -''' this should be the BEST source for characters since they most of the time also give the hiragana reading (inside brackets). And they mention seiyuu changes, generally...
* Generally every page I gave to get the anime staff data from also lists cast, just without a reading.
One thing to note, if you add a character WITHOUT the official Japanese name and WITHOUT any links whatsoever, well that's just lame and makes it quite hard to track down the character to see if that's really his name and what not, but alas, we're not as strict with characters as we are with creators. I bet we have quite a number of characters by now whose name order is wrong or who don't meet our romanisation standards.

Revision as of 17:46, 10 June 2009

The information on this page is incomplete and may not be of much use.
If you can, please help by adding to it.

General

  • By default and without asking provide a source for your change in case of:
  • Air/enddates
  • Total episode numbers
  • Official CRC
  • Official title
  • Be prepared that a mod could pm you about the changes you proposed! meaning if you get pmed and don't reply in 3-7 days, depending on the mood of the mod, it's a deny as it blocks possible creqs
  • DON'T creq v2/3/... files over v1 or other lower files! Add a new file instead!

File Source

The source field on a file represents the source of the raw file that was used. It is not the final version resolution. Example, you have a file with source DTV but you check the resolution and you see 1280x720, this doesn't automatically means that the file source is HDTV, it probably means you have an up-scaled version of the original DTV raw. If you are submitting a creq to change from DTV to HDTV please make sure it's actually a HDTV release not an up-scaled DTV version, in doubt check with the group that released the file.

Allowed Source for official CRC

  • Official sfv (good source)
  • CRC listing on official page/IRC topic (good source)
  • CRC tag in filename (should be used only if no other official source is available, for official sources, refer to previous items, should be noted that you should also check the CRC of your file and compare it to the CRC in the filename, you might have a corrupt file).
  • Envirosphere & Baka-Updates (3rd hand info, but kinda works. depends on the situation and the mod)

Picture sizes

  • Recommended size: 300x400
  • Max size for banner: 500x200 (for group-pics only)
  • Max size: 100kb

Air- & end-dates, total episodes

  • Don't creq start and enddates without a valid source!
  • English pages will only get accepted as a valid source in special cases
  • ANN and AnimeNFO are NOT official or valid sources of information. Neither is AniDB. We all only use 3rd hand info! No need to make it 4th hand.
  • A Japanese page is wanted as source for sensible data like episodenumber and air/enddates: examples

24h+ fun

(or "Why Japanese are extremely funny people who use 24:00+ times")

Japan uses a different timesystem than most other countries as they use 24:00, 25:00, 26:00. instead of 00:00, 01:00 and 02:00. Lets make an example to show what this means.

Example:
Hachimitsu to Clover
TV Schedule

  • 2005-07-07(木) 26:00

In regular (not Japanese time) this means:

  • 08.07.2005 2:00

It's very clear that 08.07.2005 is the right date in this case. Especially official pages often list the "wrong" dates and don't include times, making it harder to spot such cases. It's recommended to check a TV schedule with times like http://cal.syoboi.jp if possible.

Conclusion DON'T creq dates 1 day back if you don't know the airtime.
ALWAYS present your source for date changes!

Titles

Anime titles - official titles

This type is meant to ONLY be used for titles from official releases of the anime, not your own or fansubbers' translations. Use 'synonym' for unofficial versions and other variations.

Official titles can be historical - from past discontinued releases or television airings, as well as (non-bootlegged) VHS or DVD. If there are multiple official titles from different releases, add the newest/commonest only as 'official title' and others as synonyms.

Always provide a source for this when doing a creq.

Episode titles

If it's licensed go check the page of the licensor or the actual episodes from the R1 material.

official titles > fansubbed ones
This excludes name changes done in cases where they just become silly.

Anime songs

The following are acceptable sources for information on anime songs:

  • VIDEO - OPs, EDs and insert songs are generally all given in the video.

Links in URL fields

AniDB does not allow links to pages which offer direct downloads of copyrighted, protected, or otherwise illegal content. This includes, but is not limited to, pages which offer BitTorrent downloads. So please make sure that you don't add URLs (i.e. for anime or groups) which link to such pages. If the home page of a group links to BitTorrent pages, but doesn't offer any BitTorrent downloads itself, a link to the group's main page is acceptable.
