:If enabled, AniDB will send you a message whenever a relation between two animes is added and you have at least one file of one of the animes in mylist and no file of the other one. The idea here is to get notified about newly announced sequels and other related animes for everything which you are collecting.

:Your anime notification settings do not affect this function. Meaning you will receive these relation-added notifications even for animes which are not on your notification list.

====Notify by Mail====
:With this option you can specify if AniDB should send you an email once new notifications are available.
{{eyecatch2|Note:|This option is only available to some [[User:Mods|AniDB Mods]] at the moment.}}
----
Set the default number of rows displayed in tables with paging capabilities (prev/next). Selectable values are 10, 20, 30, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250.

==Default Languages Tab==
These settings control the default languages for animes and episodes.

===Title languages===
Choose your preferred language for anime and episode titles.
{{eyecatch|Note:|Anime titles default to japanese (transcription) aka romaji if there is no title in your selected language.}}
{{eyecatch|Note:|Episode titles default to english if there is no title in your selected language.}}

===Audio and subtitle languages===
These settings are for filtering files by language and applies to:
* Latest files
* Up2date
* Wish list
* Notifications ([[Profile#Notify only for files in my language (audio and subtitles)|enabled here]])
* Group status box in anime page
* XML (ajax pages, files in anime3 not conforming to lang options are hidden by default)

==Account Tab==
===Set AniDB Password===
Use those options to change your password and/or Email for your AniDB account.
{{eyecatch|Note:|If you change your email address a new activation email will be sent to your new address and your account will be disabled until you click the link in the activation email.}}

===Set API Key===
This key is used for encrypted communication with the [[UDP API]]. It is required for [[avdump]].

===Set Master Account===
By setting a master account you can link your [[mylist]] to that of another AniDB user. This means that you will see that users mylist as if it were your own. This feature is mainly useful for people who are sharing a common anime collection. It allows one person (the master account) to maintain the list of all anime and all others (slave accounts) to query and use that data while still being able to maintain separate votes, settings...

{{eyecatch|Note:|You will not be able to access your own mylist while a master account is set and you will not be able to modify the other user's mylist. I.e. you can't add or remove any files to/from mylist and you can't mark anything watched/unwatched (this might change in the future).
The user you specify will be notified of your request and will have to grant it before this setting has any effect.}}

{{eyecatch|Warning:|Do NOT request linkage of your mylist to that of some arbitrary user. You should notify the other person in advance. Random master account requests are considered SPAM and trying to link your mylist to that of a mod is a good way to get your ass BANNED.}}

==Permissions Tab==
Here you can specify who may view your anime list and under which conditions. You can choose between seven different [[Profile#Usergroups|usergroup]] options for the different [[Profile#Restrictions|restrictions]]. I.e. you can use this to hide your anime list from all or only from some other users or you can give external people access to your [[mylist|anime list]].

===Restrictions===
----
The following restictions are possible:
{{eyecatch|Note:|Admins can always see everything about you regardless the restrictions you set here.}}

====see me in [[user list]]====
:This user group may see you and some of your stats in the [[userlist]].
{{eyecatch2|Note:|If you don't give this access right to a user group but only "see my anime list" they will only be able to access your anime list if you provide a direct link for them.
BUT as somebody could simply try all userids not giving this access right while giving "see my anime list" is NO secure access restriction. If you want to do this use the password feature.}}

====see [[mylist|my anime list]]====
:This user group may open your [[animelist]] and see a list of all anime titles you have. Depending on the other permission settings they may be able to view your eps/files/storage/viewed and source info.

====see storage info====
:This user group may see the storage info of files in your animelist.
{{eyecatch2|Note:|This access right is only usefull in combination with "see file info".}}

====see source info====
:This user group may see the source info of files in [[mylist|your animelist]].
{{eyecatch2|Note:|This access right is only usefull in combination with "see file info"}}

====see viewed info====
:This user group may see the status (viewed/unviewed) of files in your animelist.
{{eyecatch2|Note:|Some infos of this access right are only usefull in combination with "see file info"}}

====see ep info====
:This user group may see the list of episodes you have in your animelist.

====see file info====
:This user group may see the list of files you have in your animelist.
{{eyecatch2|Note:|This access level is required if you want to allow somebody to compare his animelist with yours.}}

====see state info====
:This allows/disallows users to see the state of your [[mylist]] entries. ([[Filestates:unknown|unknown]]/[[Filestates:cd|cd]]/[[Filestates:hdd|hdd]]/[[Filestates:deleted|deleted]])

====see [[my votes]]====
:Allows other users to see a list of all your [[my votes|anime votes]].
{{eyecatch2|Note:|A list of all your reviews is always available to everyone.}}

====see [[my wishlist]]====
Allows other users to see your [[wishlist]].

====see [[my userpage]]====
:Whether the specific user type (normal AniDB user, buddy, user with your guest password or guest) may access your [http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=userpage UserPage].

===Usergroups===
----
*no one
*only with password
*only buddies
*only buddies (everyone else with password)
*members and buddies
*members and buddies (everyone else with password)
*everyone
{{eyecatch|Note:|As signing up only requires a valid email address basically everyone could get access to the Member status.}}

===Set Guest Password===
----
This is the password needed to gain access to usergroup '''[[Profile#Password|Password]]''' and its access right on your animelist.
{{eyecatch|Note:|The password may not be empty!
A value of "none" disables password access to [[mylist|your animelist]].}}

Once you set a password and gave some access permissions to the group '''[[Profile#Password|Password]]''' on the "Permissions" tab, you can give the url which is shown below the password field to other people to allow them access to the specified actions/infos of [[mylist|your animelist]].

::Be careful with shows that have 24:00 and later air hours - this means that show will air on the night after the specified date.
::Example:
::Japanese TV schedule says: 01.03.2005 25:30
::this means it aired: 02.03.2005 01:30.

Is that really necessary? Isn't it better to follow japanese scheme?

--[[User:Rowaasr13|Rowaa[SR13]]] 12:29, 16 Jun 2005 (CEST)

:What's really needed is date handling fixed, and a defined way of setting inaccuracy. At the moment being fussy about post-midnight airing does seem a bit silly, but only because the data is stored so poorly. --[[User:Rar|Rar]] 00:54, 17 Jun 2005 (CEST)

{{todo}}{{TOCright}}

The information on this page is provided as ''guidelines'' on the use of romanised Japanese (''rōmaji'') in [[AniDB:About|AniDB]]. Please be aware that this is not an exact science, there are many viable solutions to the same problem, though when submitting [[How_to_update_or_correct_existing_entries|change requests]] on romanised titles users are expected to adhere to the 'house style' of the database. When there is contention over a particular issue, this page will provide both alternatives. External links to Wikipedia are provided throughout for ideas and terms that might be unfamiliar.

== What romanised titles are for ==

*'''Primarily''', to provide a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcription_%28linguistics%29 transcription] of the Japanese title that is ''aurally recognisable'' and ''readable'' by a user with little or no knowledge of the language. In using roman script, this is obviously targeted at speakers of European languages, however as this consitutes a majority of the poulation of AniDB users, this is a fair restriction.

*''Secondary'' purposes include corresponding with other transcriptions, assisting novices in reading unfamiliar words, enabling rough pronunciation of titles, providing an alternative method of searching for a japanese title, and clarification of the reading of a particular word or phrase where it might be ambiguous.

== What romanised titles aren't for ==

*There is no requirement to be able to reconstruct the original title from romanised form. With [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_writing_system three distinct scripts plus roman], a wide range of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophone homophones], and typographic intricacies such as [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furigana furigana] usage, this is beyond the scope of a 26 letter alphabet. In all cases the Japanese title should be presented as well, a romanised form is in no way a replacement for this.
*Romanisation need not be a lossless [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transliteration transliteration] of Japanese spelling. Though less so than English, Japanese pronunciation deviates somewhat from the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoneme phonemic] spelling. As the aim is to provide an aurally recognisable transcription, it is more important to better reflect the sound than exact spelling.
*Romanised titles do not need to provide a basis for correct Japanese [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collation collation] of titles. This is a technical problem that would be better handled correctly through its own system, and would interfere with the primary purpose of the romanisation.

== Hepburn romanisation ==

The [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepburn Hepburn] romanisation system was devised for a Japanese–English dictionary, published in 1867. Despite having no official status, variations of it are used for a vast majority of transcriptions, both inside and outside Japan. Unlike the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C5%8Dmaji two other main romanisation schemes], it concentrates of representing Japanese phonology rather than the underlying spelling.

=== Table of kana romanisation ===

Each [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mora_%28linguistics%29 mora] represented in the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kana kana] spelling of a Japanese word can be transcribed into roman letters according to the table below, with a few special cases that are listed in the following sections. The [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiragana hiragana] is on the left, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katakana katakana] is on the right.

Table adpated from [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepburn wikipedia article on Hepburn], ''doesn't place this page under GFDL, because facts are not copyrightable. Copyright only protects things that are creative, and this table isn't.''. Obsolete kana are shown in red.
==[[Mylist]] Status==
This part is located directly below [[Animeentries#Basic Info|Basic Info]] (if the anime has gotten any [[Awards|award]] it will be below those) and only visible when you are logged in.

[[image:Mylist-status.png|framed|left|Shows how many episodes you have in your [[mylist]], the [[mylist:watched|watched status]] and the [[Filestates|state]] you have set.]]

It's structured into 3 sections:
:*Anime title
Besides the anime title it shows the [[Filestates|state]] you have set for your files.
:*Episodes
how many episodes you have in your mylist of the total episodes produced.
:*Seen
Of all the episodes produced, the number you have [[Mylist:watched|watched]].
If the episode total is listed as zero, it means the complete number is currently unknown. The +"x" number lists any special episodes you have watched/added to your [[mylist]]

{{eyecatch|Note:|This statistic might be outdated or show wrong values. If that happens don't panic. Just wait till the next [[Routine Maintenance|DB update]] happens.}}

==Group Info==
On each [[animeentries|anime-page]], right below the [[animeentries#mylist-status|mylist-status]] and above the [[Animeentries#Episodeentries|episode-listing]], you`ll notice the Group Info with compiled information on how many episodes that group has done, what their last episode was, whether it's complete or not and when the last episode got added to AniDB.

Furthermore if you have the anime in your [[mylist]] there will be a number in front of each group telling you how many [[fileentries|files]] you have of that group in your [[mylist]].

In addition to that info, when you want to vote or comment on a group for a specific anime, look at the last three columns: Rating, Comments and Action.
[[Image:Groupinfo.png|framed|center|The average rating for a group is hidden until at least 10 votes are cast. Also, the list only shows 5 of the groups, so you may have to click "show all" to get the complete list.
For further information about votes see: [[Votes: Anime: Group|Groupvotes per Anime]]]]

==Episode Entries==
Located at almost the bottom of the page and very hard to miss.
[[Image:Episodelist.png|center|framed|view of an unexpanded episode entry]]
Can be split into 8 subsections:

===What are they?===
----
A multi-episode file is a file with at least 2 episodes. Those are troublesome as AniDB can only associate 1 episode to 1 file at the moment.

===How to add them to AniDB?===
----
* If a group releases all episodes in multi-episode files (e.g. [http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=330 Future Boy Conan]), these files should be added to specials
* If a group releases just ''some'' files that contain multiple episodes (e.g. the dual episodes in [http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=56 Prince of Tennis]), these files should be added to the first episode they contain.
In both cases, people of course still have to add generic files to their lists. That workaround can't be avoided.

In any case, it is important to have a consistent naming scheme for titles of special episodes and file comments that is easy to understand both for humans and programs. We came up with this:
:* Naming scheme for specials: "Episode[s] X-Y: (Titles of episodes)", where X and Y can, if necessary, be followed by a letter (a,b,c,...) to indicate partial/split episodes.
::Examples:
:: "Episode 1-3: [...]" (contains three eps)
:: "Episode 1-2a: [...]" (contains complete first episode, part of the second episode)
:: "Episode 2b: [...]" (contains second part of the second episode)
:* Naming scheme for file comments: "contains ep[s] X-Y" with the same rules as above

===Additional note to reduce confusion===
----
'''Why is Ebichu 24 episodes (was aired 2 episodes at a time) when Azumanga Daioh is 26 episodes? (was aired 5 episodes at a time)'''

This question can be answered pretty fast by checking their Japanese homepages.

:* Ebichu is mentioned on the page as having 24 episodes. It was also released on 4 DVDs with 6 episodes per DVD. Can be seen here: [http://www.gainax.co.jp/anime/awaawa/] and more clearly here (purple box): [http://www.gainax.co.jp/soft/awadvd/index.html]
:* Azumanga Daioh is '''very''' clearly marked as 26 episodes with 5 chapters per episode. Can be seen here: [http://www.imagica.com/shop/azumanga/episode/ep_index.html]

* A CRC-verified file is a file for which the CRC has been found to be the same as a released 'good CRC'; it is very likely that the file is a good copy.

* A CRC-failed file is a file for which the CRC has been found to be ''different'' from a released 'good CRC'; ''it is very likely that the file is corrupt in some way''.

If you've hashed a file for use it with [[ed2kdump]], and AniDB lists it as 'CRC-verified', you don't need to do any further verification: the file is definitely uncorrupted.

= About CRC =

A CRC is a form of file hash: a short representation of a longer file that is likely to change if the file is modified. CRC is a 32-bit hash, which means that the chances of a random corruption not changing the CRC are four million to one against. Many groups release CRC hashes of their released files, so you can make sure you've downloaded them correctly.

Any change, from a single changed bit to widespread changes throughout the file, will change the CRC. While a single-bit error is often imperceptible, files with major corruption may be unplayable. It is possible to patch a corrupt file to a known-good version using a tool such as [[Zidrav]] or [[QuickPar]].

The other hashes AniDB lists (MD5, SHA-1, and ed2k) are ''stronger'' than CRC: the chance of a CRC differing between two files with the same ed2k, SHA-1 or MD5 hash is at least 79 billion billion billion to one. If the MD5, SHA-1, or ed2k hash matches a published 'good hash', then it is very unlikely indeed that the CRC will fail. When AniDB lists a file as CRC-verified, you can use any of the hashes listed to verify the file.

{{update}}
Need to add information about generic files.

==Getting started: How to add files to your [[mylist]]==
[[image:howto-mylist-login.jpg|framed|right|Make sure you're logged in]]

Requirements:

You need a working account on AniDB. (See: [[Signup FAQ|How and why signup to AniDB?!]])

There are a few different ways to add files to your [[mylist]]:
:*via the Web-Interface
:*via the IRC-Bot [[IRC:Chii|Chii[AR]]]
:*via the AniDB-Clients ([[WebAOM]] & [[AOM]])

==Adding Files using...==
===Web-Interface===
----
First, when you are on [http://www.anidb.info http://www.anidb.info], you log in or sign in to make sure you can identify yourself.

When you're successfully logged in, you'll see your username in the lower-left corner.

====Locate the entry of the anime you want to add====
:*via [[Animelist]]

::Click on the animelist-link in the anidb-menu on the left. Here you see all the anime series and movies which are in the database. Choose one of them you want to add to your list.

:*via Search

::Enter some words of the title you look for to the Input-Field in the upper right area of the page, click "Search" and then choose the entry of what you looked for.

====Choose the files and add them====
[[image:howto-mylist-overview.jpg|framed|left|Expanded Overview of an Anime]]
When you clicked on a [[animeentries|title]], you`ll see a bunch of information - Title, genre, a picture of the anime, and more stuff. But what we're looking for is below: A listing of the Episodes.

When the page is loaded, you`ll see tiny orange '+' signs; one in the first line [[image:howto-mylist-all.gif]] and one for each ep. Whenever you click on one of those in front of the episode-titles, you`ll see one or more files by one or more groups. You can already see some of the file's info there like filesize, group name and an ed2k-link.

Now you should locate the entry for the file you have.

It would be best to compare the files by their ed2k-link (easiliest done via [[AOM]] or [[WebAOM]]) before adding them to your [[mylist]], but you can of course just find the right entry by comparing the size or the group-tag.

{{eyecatch|Note:|A gray background indicates files which are not known to be good or bad.
A green background indicates [[Files:CRC-verified files|CRC-verified files]].
A red background indicates [[Files:CRC-verified files|CRC-failed files]].
A dark gray background indicates [[Files:Deprecated files|deprecated files]].
A white background indicates [[Files:Generic files|generic files]]}}

Click the link "add to own" which is in at the back of the file you want.

After that you`ll find yourself in another screen, where you can add a little personal info (where you got the files, and on which [[Filestates:cd|cd]]/[[Filestates:hdd|hdd]] they are stored. There are also other [[Filestates]]) When using [[Files:Generic files|generic files]] consider setting the correct [[Filetype|filetype]] - you can leave all the fields empty and just choose either "watched" or "unwatched". Though it's prefered to set the correct data now, but it's also possible to change everything later via your [[mylist]].

Now, if you want to add more than just a one or two eps of a series, it works a little different.

First, you see on top of the list an [[image:howto-mylist-all.gif]]-sign. Whenever you click on that one, it would be like having clicked all of the other '(+)' signs.

Now it shows for all episodes a lot of info, and a lot of links. The way to add them to your own list is to check the checkboxes which are in front of the titles. After you`ve checked all the files you want to add to your list, scroll down until you see the button: add selected to [[mylist]]

The box to the left can help you to tell the db if you`ve watched or haven`t watched the selected files (yet).
{{eyecatch|Hint:|If you have watched one half of the series, you better check those eps, select 'watched' and press the button. Then you do the same thing for the eps you haven't watched, and select 'unwatched' before pressing the button. That way it goes pretty fast.}}

===Anidb Clients===
----
[[AOM]] [[WebAOM]]

===[[Ed2kdump]]===
----
Please read: [[ed2kdump]]

===[[IRC:Chii|Chii[AR]]]===
----
[[IRC:Chii|Chii[AR]]] can usually be found in [[IRC:Anidb|#anidb]]. It reacts to certain commands; for adding files to your [[mylist]] [[IRC:Chii#!addfile|!addfile]] is of interest.

In all of the following examples, you can add a simple w at the end of this command to indicate that you watched the file, otherwise it's marked "unwatched".
However, first of all, you need to login at [[IRC:Chii|Chii[AR]]]. This is done by doing:

/msg Chii[AR] auth (Your Loginname) (Your Password)

====Add files by ed2k-link====
Again, this is the best way to add files to your [[mylist]], that way you can be 99.99% sure that the file you added is the same as the one meant in the db.

Just type:

!addfile (ed2k-link)

Example:

!addfile ed2k://|file|Something.avi|126863828|7f2b985df22661f66449ee72d81b6daa|

{{eyecatch|Note:|The filename does not matter a bit - the file is identified by it's hash and size.}}

[[IRC:Chii|Chii[AR]]] will reply to this, either with: "Added to [[mylist]]", "File already in [[mylist]]" or "no such file in db". In the first two cases, you are done. In the last case, you should consider adding your file to the anidb (given you don't have a corrupted version).

====Add files by Epnumber and group====
If you want to add a file but you only know the anime's name and ep-number, you first have to find the file in the db. Therefore, we use the [[IRC:Chii#!file|!file-command]]]

!file (Anime Name) (Ep-Number) (group)

Example:

!file Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 1 AonE

{{eyecatch|Note:|Instead of such long names, you can also use a shorter name or an abbreviation. Type:}}

!stitle (Anime Name)

to get a list of valid short-titles (e.g.: GitsSAC for the above)

[[IRC:Chii|Chii[AR]]] will reply with a list of File-IDs and groups.

Type

!addfile ([[fid]])

to add the file to your [[mylist]].
{{eyecatch|Note:|All files added with the [[IRC:Chii#!addfile|!addfile-command]] are added as [[Filestates:unknown|unknown]] to your [[mylist]].
You have to use the [[IRC:Chii#!state|!state-command]] to fix that.}}

==Warning: Copied from wikipedia==
This is a copy of [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing Wikipedia's editing help], with only superficial changes to remove missing templates and references to wikipedia conventions. It should be better than nohing, but if you have time, please edit this page to make it more appropriate. Also, most of the links are broken. If appropriate, please consider taking the time to port them over.

==General==
To edit a [[MediaWiki]] page, click on the "'''Edit this page'''" (or just "'''edit'''") link at one of its edges. This will bring you to the '''edit page''': a page with a text box containing the ''[[wikitext]]'': the editable source code from which the server produces the webpage. Depending on the preferences that have been set, a version of the edit page called '''preview page''' appears: in this case the rendered page is also shown; if not you get it by pressing "Show preview", see below. .

The edit link of a page showing an old version leads to an edit page with the old wikitext. This allows [[Help:Reverting a page to an earlier version|restoring the old version]]. However, the edit link of a [[diff]] page gives the current wikitext, even if the diff page shows an old version below the table of differences.

After adding to or changing the wikitext it is useful to press "Show preview", which produces the corresponding webpage in your browser but does not make it publicly available yet (not until you press "Save"). Errors in formatting, links, tables, etc., are often much easier to discover from the rendered page than from the raw wikitext.

'''If you are not satisfied you can make more changes and preview the page as many times as necessary. Then write a short [[Help:Edit summary|edit summary]] in the small text field below the edit-box and when finished press "Save". Depending on your system, pressing the "Enter" key while the edit box is not active (i.e., there is no typing cursor in it) may have the same effect as pressing "Save".'''

You may find it more convenient to copy and paste the text first into your favorite [[en:text editor|text editor]], edit and spell check it there, and then paste it back into your [[en:web browser|web browser]] to preview. This way, you can also keep a local backup copy of the pages you have edited. It also allows you to make changes offline, but before you submit your changes, ''please make sure nobody else has edited the page'' since you saved your local copy (by checking the [[Help:page history|page history]]), otherwise you may accidently revert someone else's edits. If someone ''has'' edited it since you copied the page, you'll have to merge their edits into your new version (you can find their specific edits by using the "[[Help:diff|diff]]" feature of the page history). These issues are handled automatically by the Mediawiki software if you edit the page in your web browser.

For a redirect page the preview and the rendered page may show the contents differently: the latter shows the canonical form of the target, while the preview renders the link in the usual way, compare [http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Babel&redirect=no] with the preview of [http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Babel&action=edit].

See also [[MediaWiki architecture]].

==Composition of the edit page==
*[[help:edit toolbar|edit toolbar]] (optional)
*edit box
*[[help:edit summary|edit summary]] box
*save/preview/cancel links
*list of templates used
*preview (optionally either on every edit page or just after pressing "Show preview"; optionally the first item)

== Dummy edit and null edit==

If the wikitext is not changed no edit will be recorded and the edit summary is discarded.

A '''dummy edit''' is a change in wikitext that has no effect on the rendered page, such as changing the number of [[w:newline|newline]]s at some position from 0 to 1 or from 2 to 3 or conversely (changing from 1 to 2 makes a difference, see below). This allows an edit summary, and is useful for correcting a previous edit summary, or an accidental marking of a previous edit as "minor" (see below).

To refresh the cache of some item in the database a lesser kind of dummy edit, called a '''null edit''', may be sufficient: one that does not cause any change in the wikitext, and no entry in the history, in Recent Changes, etc.: this can be done by opening the edit window and saving; a section edit is sufficient. See also [[Help:Category#A_category_tag_in_a_template.3B_caching_problem|A category tag in a template; caching problem]].

== Minor edits ==
When editing a page, a [[MediaWiki User's Guide: Logging-in|logged-in]] user has the option of flagging the edit as a "minor edit". This feature is important, because users can choose to ''hide'' minor edits in their view of the [[MediaWiki User's Guide: The Recent Changes page | Recent Changes page]], to keep the volume of edits down to a manageable level.

When to use this is somewhat a matter of personal preference. The rule of thumb is that an edit of a page that consists of spelling corrections, formatting, and minor rearranging of text should be flagged as a "minor edit". A major edit is basically something that makes the entry worth revisiting for somebody who wants to watch the article rather closely. So any "real" change, even if it is a single word, should be flagged as a "major edit".

The reason for not allowing a user who is not logged in to mark an edit as minor is that vandalism could then be marked as a minor edit, in which case it would stay unnoticed longer. This limitation is another reason to log in.

== The wiki markup ==
In the left column of the table below, you can see what effects are possible. In the right column, you can see how those effects were achieved. In other
words, to make text look like it looks in the left column, type it in the format you see in the right column.

You may want to keep this page open in a separate browser window for reference. If you want to try out things without danger of doing any harm, you can do so in the [[Sandbox]].
==Hover box==
A hover box without a link is possible: <nowiki>inch</nowiki> gives inch. With {{tcw|Title}} one can use <nowiki>{{</nowiki>title|2.54 cm|inch}}.

Combined with a link, with an independent hover box text: [[w:en:inch|inch]] *

Since it depends on the browser whether the hover box appears, it should only be used for non-essential information, for example information one can also find by following the link.

Some browsers show the hover box only a number of seconds. Even though it reappears when the cursor is moved away and back, this makes the hover box unsuitable for long or complicated text. {{Title|Some browsers show the hover box only a number of seconds.
Details of what the browser shows may vary, e.g. "Title:" in front, indentation, code like <nowiki>"

"</nowiki> being shown, with or without newline, etc.

==Templates==
Some part of a page may correspond in the edit box to just a reference to another page, in the form <nowiki>{{</nowiki>''name''<nowiki>}}</nowiki>, referring to the page "Template:''name''" (or if the name starts with a namespace prefix, it refers to the page with that name; if it starts with a colon it refers to the page in the main namespace with that name without the colon). This is called a [[help:template|template]]. For changing that part of the page, edit that other page. Sometimes a separate edit link is provided for this purpose. A convenient way to put such a link in a template is with a template like [[m:Template:ed]]. Note that the change also affects other pages which use the same template.

==Page protection==

In a few cases the link labeled "{{MediaWiki:Editthispage}}" is replaced by the text "{{MediaWiki:Protectedpage}}" (or equivalents in the language of the project). In that case the page cannot be edited.

==Position-independent wikitext==

Wikitext for which the result does not depend on the position in the wikitext page:

*[[interlanguage link]]s (see also above) - the mutual order is preserved, but otherwise the positions within the page are immaterial
*[[category]] specification - ditto
*<nowiki>__NOTOC__, __FORCETOC__</nowiki>, see [[Help:Section]]

==Separating edits==

When moving or copying a piece of text within a page or from another page, and also making other edits, it is useful to separate these edits. This way the [[Help:Diff|diff function]] can be usefully applied for checking these other edits.

==Error message==

If, due to server problems, a save command results in an error message, either the saving has failed, or just the confirmation. Check e.g. My Contributions to find out.

[[Category:Definitions]]
Occasionally a group will release an updated version of the same episode. This usually happens to fix an error in encoding or translation, but can also be done to standardise the encoding of earlier episodes in a series with that of later ones, to add missing material, or to replace a poor-quality source when a higher-quality source becomes available.

When such a file (known on AniDB as a v2, v3, etc.) is released, the files it replaces are marked as 'deprecated'. While there may not necessarily be anything wrong with them, there exists a better version. If there is something wrong with the encoding of the file, its quality will be set to 'corrupted'.

== how about a less daunting term than 'mylist' for the front page? ==
Might it be better to say something like 'How to... Use anidb to organise your anime collection', rather than 'How to... create a mylist' ?

'mylist' is anidb jargon, and thus not something that we can count on someone visiting the wiki for help to know the meaning of. It's conceivable that someone who didn't know the meaning of the word 'mylist' wouldn't realise what mylsits were capable of (it's pretty well-hidden from an unregistered user). By saying something like 'Use anidb to organise your anime collection', it's immediately obvious to the user how anidb can benefit her.

I don't have the bare-faced cheek to just roll this idea out on the front page and see if if floats, but I hope you might find it interesting.
== Description of AniDB on Main Page ==

Just using Der Idiot's change of my change as an excuse to try out the talk feature... I had put a link to the [[Anidb:About|About]] page in the list of links on the [[Main Page]], he removed it with the comment:
{{quote|Der Idiot|That link is visible everywhere at the bottom of the screen. i doubt it's needed to add that to the main page as a seperate option. Though some words about Anidb on the mainpage wouldn't be bad.}}

I didn't even notice the About at the bottom, and I doubt that other people will either... I do think that there should be something that people see first thing that has a brief description of the site though.
:I agree, some about needs to be mainpaged. When the wiki is a bit more mature, I'll probably do something fancy with tables on the fontpage anyway. Meanwhile, quotetest...
